The existence of this rock has been known for a long time, and a rock-like object is also depicted in the 1702 Genroku picture map at the location of Tuishi.
There are various theories about the origin of the name Tuishi, including a ``pointed stone'' and a ``grinding stone'' for sharpening knives.
As a result of a survey by the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan in 2017, it was confirmed that this rock is a floating rock that remains above the water surface even during high tides, and in 2019, Tuishi became the westernmost point in Japan; It moved approximately 110 m west.
